Monterey Gives! will match your donations for Save The Whales through December 31, 2015 when you donate through Monterey Gives!
Many inland school children do not have a connection to the ocean. Save The Whales wants to change this. Your Monterey Gives! donations will help purchase a custom-made, lifesize inflatable humpback whale designed to replicate Humphrey, the famous whale who swam inland up the Sacramento River. Children will be able to crawl inside Humphrey and learn that whales are mammals too, and they need our help to survive. Hands-on stations outside the whale will have bones, baleen, and a feeding station to learn how whales feed. The kids will learn about the challenges that whales and other marine mammals face such as litter and plastic bags that enter the ocean through storm drains and are deadly to marine life.
Humphrey will provide an unforgettable and inspiring learning experience for students. Children will learn that they can make a difference, and that what they do on land impacts the ocean no matter how far away they live.

On October 18, 2015, Mexican artist Memuco was awarded the "Héroe del Medio Ambiente" ("Environmental Hero") at the Monterey Bay Aquarium through a partnership with Save The Whales. The event was well-attended with dynamic presenter Penelope Menchacha giving him the award. There is no cetacean that represents Mexico better than la vaquita, and no artist to better represent that country than Memuco. We were very fortunate to have him come to Monterey and learn first-hand his dedication to representing endangered species. We celebrated ocean conservation and Latin American tradition. Programs included live music, cultural dance, feeding shows, and Save The Whales crafts. See him receive the award. In 2016, we must redouble our efforts to save the small vaquita, the one-of-a-kind porpoise that only lives in the Sea of Cortez. Its numbers are hard to estimate, somewhere between 50 and 100. While Mexico has stepped up its protection, the only thing that will save it is a permanent ban on gillnets; a two-year ban is not nearly enough. Happy Holidays to one and all.
